GCHS Students Advance to National FCCLA STAR Competition

Garden City High School members of the Kansas Association of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, or FCCLA, attended the annual State Leadership Conference and STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Event Competition on April 3rd and 4th in Wichita, Kansas.

The following students qualified to compete at the National Convention this July in Nashville, Tennessee.  They are Javier Cervantes, junior in Fashion Design, Gold Rating, Star Cross Couture. Javier designed costumes for the upcoming GCHS production of “Romeo & Juliet”. He also will be attending the International Thespian’s Society Festival in June for his work on “Romeo & Juliet”.  Vicki Nguyen, senior, Recycle & Redesign, Gold Rating, Silver Rating, Green with Envy, Vicki designed a dress using the unconventional material of Maurices shopping bags. For her STAR event she had to research the recycling industry and have a marketing plan for her design.  Paola Rodriguez, senior, Advocacy- Breaking Society, received a Silver Rating. In January Paola organized an assembly for the freshmen class about loving yourself and accepting who you are.

The following students also competed and placed at the state competition. Students receiving a Silver Rating include: Angel Grijalva, sophomore, Fashion Construction; Ryan Glaze, sophomore, Bryan Carrasco, senior, and Laura Ibarra, sophomore, Culinary Team (also received a scholarship); Arlene Rios and Paola Echievara, seniors, Illustrated Talk; Brenda Resendiz and Mirtha Arzate, juniors, Interior Design.  Students receiving a Bronze Rating include: Salma Roman and Raylyn Swank, juniors, Hospitality Tourism and Recreation; Tehya Rhodes, senior, Focus on Children.

Robyn Hilt, Elisabeth Maldonado, and Jenette Turpin are the Garden City High School FCCLA co-advisors.
