Garden City High School broadcast media student, Oscar Fernandez took first place in the Olathe Northwest eMagine Media Festival.  Fernandez won for his ten minute edit of a documentary he and Delaney Despain completed earlier in the year.  The documentary explored the relationship that the Garden City community had with the Somali community following the thwarted bomb plot back in October 2016.

This is one of the premiere media contests in Kansas City and this is the first time a western Kansas school has taken first place in this competition. The other winning schools were in the Kansas City area.  The nearest school to Garden City to win an award in the competition was Smokey Hill, from Lindsborg.  The eMagine Media Festival is a prestigious event for Kansas City multimedia design.
