Board of Education Meeting Recap June 22

The USD 457 Board of Education met Thursday, June 22, during a regularly scheduled meeting. The meeting was held in the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street.

The board approved separating the operation of the Garden City High School Girl's Wrestling and Boys' Wrestling programs. The separation of programs is already being done at the middle school level; this move aligns the district at all levels.

The board approved updates to the district’s Discipline Policy. The policy was last updated in 1998. There will be separate policies for grade levels PK-2nd grade, 3rd-6th grade, and 7th-12th grade. Each policy includes five levels of discipline. The focus of the updated policies will be on behavior modification rather than punitive consequences and includes support for student needs and their families. The updated policy will allow administration more flexibility with consequences while still following board policy.

That board voted to dispose of the Friend School that was advertised for sale and accepted the highest bid on the property. They directed legal counsel to complete the legal contract of sale and for the Real Estate Purchase Agreement to be signed by the board president. The board voted to advertise the school property at Friend for sale and to accept sealed bids at its June 5th meeting. The deadline for the bids was June 21, 2023.

The board approved the following items during the meeting. They include a Clinical Contract Agreement between Garden City Community College and the district for the 2023-2024 school year. A Therapeutic Education Program Agreement between Compass Behavioral Health and the district for behavior health treatment and special education services. A contractual agreement between the district, Garden City, and Compass Behavioral Health for the 2023-2024 school year.
