Board of Education Meeting Recap August 28

Garden City Public Schools Board of Education met during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, August 28, 2023. The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street. 

Eric Velander, GCHS Journalism and Multimedia teacher, provided information on the Garden City High School Journalism and Multimedia Programs.

RSP & Associates presented information on performing a boundary study for the district. It has been over a decade that the district has been using the current school boundaries. There are a number of different factors used to determine boundaries, including but not limited to building capacity and utilization, demographic studies, enrollment balance, the needs of students, and the District Strategic Plan. The board approved the boundary study and anticipates the implementation of updated boundaries for the 2024-25 school year.

They approved the publication of the notice exceeding the revenue neutral tax rate for the 2023-2024 school year and publication of the 2023-2024 budget to our website and the Garden City Telegram.

They had a first read and discussed the 2023-24 Child Nutrition and Wellness Department Staff Handbook, School Psychologist Intern Agreement, and Board Policies GAOA Drug-Free Workplace, GBQA Reduction of Teaching Staff, and KN Complaints. There was no action taken on the handbook and policies. These items will be on the consent agenda for the next regular board meeting.

The board approved a quote for the continuation of Classlink Integration from Imagine Learning for $220,000.   ClassLink is a safe, secure way for students and teachers to connect with applications and files

The Board held an executive session after the completion of all other business. The executive session was pertaining to personnel matters of non-elected personnel. There was no action taken after the executive session.

The board approved the following items during the meeting. They include: Minutes of the August 14 regular meeting; Board Policies GAAF Emergency Safety Interventions, GARID Military Leave, Policy IFCC Overnight Accommodations, JH Student Activities, and KK Disposal of District Property. A resolution of Board Vacancy due to the resignation of Dana Nanninga from the Board of Education during the last board meeting.

 The next meeting of the Board of Education will be Monday, September 11, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.
