Board of Education Meeting Recap October 2

Garden City Public Schools Board of Education met during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, October 2, 2023. The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street.

The Board recognized Graham Dirks, Garden City High School senior, for being named a semi-finalist in the National Merit Scholarship process. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. About 95 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

The Board received a building presentation from Garden City High School. The Student Council presented information on things that they have done so far during the school year to build school spirit.

The Board approved a Temporary Transportation Driver Agreement.  The agreement helps the district get drivers into smaller vehicles to help transport students while they are working on getting their CDL license to transport students in school busses.

They had a first read and discussed Board Policy AG Closing School Buildings and Board Policy JBC Enrollment.  There was no action taken on the policies. They will take the AG policy up again at the next board meeting for a vote. The JBC policy will be taken up at the November 6th Board meeting.

The next meeting of the Board of Education will be Monday, October 16, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.
