Board of Education Meeting Recap

Garden City Public Schools Board of Education met during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, September 9, 2024. The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street. 

The board conducted a public hearing and adopted a Resolution to Exceed the Revenue Neutral Tax Rate and they approved a Resolution to adopt the Local Option Budget Percentage.

The board conducted a public hearing on the 2024-2025 budget. The mill increased from 49.4 to 49.561.

Under the new business section, the board had first reads on a number of Curriculum Council items. The GCCC Intro to Computer Concepts, which is a name change, and the GCC Theroy of Music, which is a new course. These items will be voted on at the next board meeting. They approved the Board of Education Policy GAOE Workers Compensation.

There was a discussion item on the District Reconfiguration Proposal. The proposal would transition the school district to a K-5, 6-8, 9-12 grade configuration by the Fall of 2028. Convert Bernadine Sitts Intermediate Center and Charles O. Stones Intermediate Center to elementary schools. Addition and renovations to Kenneth Henderson Middle School. That would add 16 to 20 classrooms and accommodate 50% of the district's 6th-8th grade students. Close Gertrude Walker Elementary School and repurpose for other district use. Close and sell Jennie Barker Elementary School and Plymell Elementary School. Georgia Matthews Elementary school would remain open. The board will take this item up at its next meeting and vote on what direction it will go with the proposal for the district.

The board approved the following items during the meeting. They include minutes of the August 19, 2024, regular meeting, and the August 29 2024, Special Board of Education Meeting. Accounts Payable with all major accounts containing adequate balances to meet current obligations. Personnel certified and classified actions.

The Board held five executive sessions after the completion of all other business. The first executive session was for consultation with an attorney for the body or agency which would be deemed privileged in an attorney-client relationship. The second executive session was for consultation with an attorney for the body or agency which would be deemed privileged in an attorney-client relationship. The third executive session was for consultation with an attorney for the body or agency which would be deemed privileged in an attorney-client relationship. The fourth executive session was for confidential data relating to financial affairs or trade secrets of corporations, partnerships, trusts, and individual proprietorships. The fifth executive session was for confidential data relating to financial affairs or trade secrets of corporations, partnerships, trusts, and individual proprietorships. No action was taken after the executive sessions.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Education will be Thursday, September 26, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.
