Board of Education Meeting Recap

Garden City Public Schools Board of Education met during a regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, September 26, 2024. The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street.

Under the new business section, the board rejected the bid for the replacement of the Abe Hubert Elementary School HVAC system.

Under the unfinished business, the board discussed and voted on what direction it would go with the proposal presented by the Boundary Subcommittee. In a 4 – 3 vote, the board voted to reject the recommendation from the Boundary Subcommittee and request staff to work with RSP & Associates to complete only the redrawing of the boundary lines in the current building grade configuration for the district.

The proposal would transition the school district to a K-5, 6-8, 9-12 grade configuration by the Fall of 2028. It would convert Bernadine Sitts Intermediate Center and Charles O. Stones Intermediate Center to elementary schools. Addition and renovations to Kenneth Henderson Middle School. That would add 16 to 20 classrooms and accommodate 50% of the district's 6th - 8th grade students. Close Gertrude Walker Elementary School and repurpose it for other district use. Close and sell Jennie Barker Elementary School and Plymell Elementary School. Georgia Matthews Elementary School would remain open.

The board approved the following items during the meeting. They include minutes of the September 9, 2024, RNR Hearing, September 9, 2024, Budget Hearing, September 9, 2024, regular meeting, September 10, 2024, special meeting, and September 19, 2024, special meeting.
