Board of Education Meeting Recap

Garden City Public Schools Board of Education met during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, October 7, 2024. The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street. 

The Board recognized Caitlin Sotelo, special education teacher at Garden City Achieve, who is the recipient of the 2024 Outstanding Educator of Students with Autism Award. She received the award for her teaching career, educating, supporting, and improving the lives of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families.

The Board received a building presentation from Garfield Early Childhood Center. The school currently has an enrollment of 570 students. The school is planning Parent Engagement Days for each unit of the curriculum, giving the school more opportunities to get families in the building and into classrooms. The school is excited to have families in the building as they work to build partnerships and relationships with them.

Under the new business section, the Board had a first read on bids for four route buses and three SUVs. They also had a first read on the quote for a preventative maintenance agreement for a one-year term from TATRO for $89,125.

The Board approved the following items during the meeting. They include minutes of the September 26, 2024, regular meeting. Accounts Payable with all major accounts containing adequate balances to meet current obligations. Personnel certified and classified actions. Leader in Me renewal for FY25 in the amount of $55,811.55 for nine elementary schools, one intermediate center and Garden City Achieve.

The Board visited and took a tour of The Dome Facility at 1706 E. Mary Street. 

The Board held three executive sessions after the completion of all other business. The first executive session was for personnel matters relating to non-elected personnel. The second executive session was for preliminary discussion relating to the acquisition of real property. The third was for personnel matters relating to non-elected personnel. There was no action taken after each of the executive sessions.  

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Education will be Monday, October 21, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.
