Garden City Public Schools Board of Education met during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, November 4, 2024. The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street.
The Board received a building presentation from Edith Scheuerman Elementary School. The school’s Leader In Me Student Lighthouse Team spoke about the 7 habits they are learning and how they use those habits to be successful at school. Students from the school also lead Pledge of Allegiance at the start of the meeting.
The Board received a presentation and there was discussion from the Garden City Community College Board of Trustees on Strengthening Collaboration and Data Reporting Requests. The college’s foremost priority is the success of every student who enrolls in the community college.
The Garden City High School Resist group visited with the Board about a proposed policy change regarding tobacco use throughout the district. The Board did not take any action on this item.
The Board also received a Budget Report from Jessica Nothern, Chief Financial Officer. District Policy states there shall be quarterly budget report presented to the Board of Education. The presentation was a broad overview of the financials and an explanation of the Cash Summary Report that the Board is given monthly. There was also a comparison of FY24 presented.
Under unfinished business, there was discussion of redrawing the district boundaries. The Board voted to hold off on redrawing the boundaries at this time.
The Board approved the following items during the meeting. They include minutes of the October 21, 2024, regular meeting. Accounts Payable with all major accounts containing adequate balances to meet current obligations. Personnel certified and classified actions. Curriculum Council Items of the addition of a new course, Peer Leadership 2, as a .5 credit elective course. The addition of a new course, GCHS Honors Government, as a .5 credit elective course. The disposal of curriculum materials no longer in use in the district.
The Board held an executive session after the completion of all other business. The executive session was for personnel matters relating to non-elected personnel. There was no action taken after the executive session.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Education will be Monday, December 2, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.
