Baord of Education Recap

Garden City Public Schools Board of Education met during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, December 2, 2024. The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room. 

The Board recognized the Garden City High School Boys Cross Country Team for being the 2024 6A State Champs. 

The Board received a building presentation from Charles O. Stones Intermediate Center. The Lighthouse Team led the opening of the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.  The school presented about the culture, climate and the great things that are happening at the facility so far this school year.

The Board received a presentation on the Kansas Leadership Academy from Suzette Goldsby-Lewis, Principal at Plymell Elementary, Violet Johnson, Admin Intern at Horace Good Middle School and Amber Vigil, teacher at Plymell Elementary. This program cultivates strong teacher leaders, building capacity within schools and the district while preparing participants for future administrative roles.

The Board received a We Survey report on the positive gains that the district has had this past year in regards to staff climate.

The Board approved the following items during the meeting. They include minutes of the November 4, 2024, regular meeting and the November 18, 2024, special meeting. Accounts Payable with all major accounts containing adequate balances to meet current obligations. Personnel certified and classified actions. Updated out of state travel for Garden City High School for 2024-25. A Founding Sponsorship Agreement between the district and Scooter’s for $50,000.00 commencing January 1, 2024, and ending December 31, 2028. An update to the Administrative Personnel Handbook: Definition of the Superintendent's Leadership Team.

Under new business, there was discussion and approval to connect the Plant Facilities Department to City water; discussion of Capital Projects; approved bids for 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton pickups for Plant Facilities; and discussion on Insurance Renewal.  The Board had a first read on the following new courses from the Curriculum Council: GCCC CompTIA Security+; GCCC CJ Interviewing and Report Writing; Agriculture Leadership and Communications; Eclectic String Orchestra; GCCC General Biology; GCCC Biology I; GCCC Biology II; GCCC Certified Medication Aide; GCCC Phlebotomy; GCCC Contemporary Mathematics; GCCC Anatomy and Physiology; and GCCC Anatomy and Physiology I.

The Board held an executive session after the completion of all other business. The executive session was for Preliminary discussion relating to the acquisition of real property. There was no action taken after the executive session.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Education will be Thursday, December 19, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.
