arden City Public Schools Board of Education met during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, February 3, 2025. The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street.
The Board received a building presentation from Alta Brown Elementary School. The Lighthouse Team led the opening of the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. The school has 348 students and there are 11 different languages spoken in the building. The school presented about the great things that are happening at the facility so far this school year.
There was a housing update and presentation on the Neighborhood Revitalization Plan from Danielle Burke, Assistant City Manager. The City Commission has a goal of 4,000 housing units by 2030.
The Board approved the following items during the meeting. They include minutes of the January 6, 2025, regular meeting; the January 13, 2025, special board meeting; the January 15, 2025, special board meeting;. the January 20, 2025, special board meeting; and the January 21, 2025, special board meeting. Accounts Payable with all major accounts containing adequate balances to meet current obligations. Personnel certified and classified actions. The following new courses from the Curriculum Council: New Courses: Exploring Art Careers and A.P. United States Government and Politics. Curriculum, Functional Academics - Teach Town. The District Audit Report as presented at the regular meeting on January 6, 2025. The fire alarm system replacement at Plymell Elementary School for $67,790.00 from Davis Fire Systems.
Under unfinished business, the Board approved the purchase of the Cenobots Autonomous Scrubber and Sweeper for $73,316.25 from Pur-O-Zone for Plant Facilities. The Board discussed the Bernadine Sitts Intermediate Center re-roofing project bid.
Under new business, there was discussion on the Garfield Early Childhood Center re-roofing project. The Board reviewed and will approve at the next meeting the following Board Policies: BDA Developing Adopting Amending and Repealing Board Policy; CC Organizational Chart (New); CG Administrative Personnel; CNA - Preservation of Documents Pending Legal Action; DE Fraud Prevention and Investigation (New); DFAC Federal Fiscal Compliance; ICA Pilot Projects; IDACA Special Education Services; JGFGAA Student Stock Supply of Emergency Medication (New); JGFGBA Student Self-Administration of Medications; and KN Complaints. The Board reviewed and deleted the following policies: CD Administrative Line and Staff Relations; and CGI Administrator Evaluation.
The Board held a first read of an updated 2025-2026 district calendar. Spring Break will be moved one week later to align with the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) and the Kansas Board of Regents recommended spring break week. The proposed change will have Spring Break taking place during the week of March 16th instead of the week of March 9th, which would line up with Colleges, Universities, and School Districts throughout the state. As a result of that change, the In-service Day originally scheduled for March 20th will be moved to March 13th and will be a Teacher Release In-service Day.
The Board approved the continuation of Foundations in Personal Finance by Ramsey Education, an existing curriculum resource for $31,270.69. The quote is a seven-year contract extending from June 2025 through June 2032.
The Board held three executive sessions after the completion of all other business. The first executive session was for personnel matters for non-elected personnel. The second executive session was for matters relating to employer-employee negotiations, whether or not in consultation with the representative or representatives of the body or agency. The third executive session was for preliminary discussion relating to the acquisition of real property. No action was taken after the executive sessions.
The next meeting of the Board of Education will be held on Monday, February 17, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.
