Board of Education Meeting Recap

Garden City Public Schools Board of Education met during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, February 17, 2025. The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street. 

The Board received a building presentation from Victor Ornelas Elementary School. The Lighthouse Team led the opening of the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. The school presented about the great things that are happening at the facility so far this school year.

There was a presentation on the Grow Well Clinic. They offer employer-sponsored primary and preventative healthcare programs, which include primary and urgent care, physical and emotional wellness, nutritional counseling, workers compensation-related care, and employment / pre-employment screenings.

The Board approved the following items during the meeting. They include minutes of the February 3, 2025, regular meeting. Accounts Payable with all major accounts containing adequate balances to meet current obligations. Personnel certified and classified actions. The following Board of Education policy updates were adopted: BDA Developing Adopting Amending and Repealing Board Policy; CC Organizational Chart (New);CG Administrative Personnel; CNA - Preservation of Documents Pending Legal Action; DE Fraud Prevention and Investigation (New); DFAC Federal Fiscal Compliance; ICA Pilot Projects; IDACA Special Education Services; JGFGAA Student Stock Supply of Emergency Medication (New); JGFGBA Student Self-Administration of Medications; and KN Complaints. These Board of Education policies were deleted include: CD Administrative Line and Staff Relations; and CGI Administrator Evaluation. The updated 2025-2026 District Calendar.

The Board received a Winter Assessment Data update from Heather Stegman, Director of Instruction and Michelle Baier, Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator. They summarized the 2024-2025 FastBridge data as well as student progress between the fall and winter screenings and from last year to this year.

The Board approved a proposal for a new all-inclusive playground for Edith Scheuerman Elementary School under unfinished business.

Under new business, the Board held a first read on the 2026-27 District Calendar; New Board of Education Policy - In-District Transfer Policy and the Pledge of Allegiance. They approved flooring at Abe Hubert Elementary School. 

The Board held two executive sessions after the completion of all other business. The first executive session was for matters relating to employer-employee negotiations, whether or not in consultation with the representative or representatives of the body or agency. The second executive session was for preliminary discussion relating to the acquisition of real property. No action was taken after the executive sessions.

The next meeting of the Board of Education will be held on Monday, March 3, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.
