Board of Education Recap

Garden City Public Schools Board of Education met during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, March 3, 2025. The meeting was held at the Educational Support Center Board Room, 1205 Fleming Street. 

The Board received a building presentation from Horace Good Middle School. The school presented about the great things that are happening at the facility so far this school year. Students from the school led the opening of the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Board approved the following items during the meeting. They include minutes of the February 17, 2025, regular meeting. Accounts Payable with all major accounts containing adequate balances to meet current obligations. Personnel certified and classified actions. The 2026-2027 school district calendar. The following new policies: JBCD Student In-District Transfers and Pledge of Allegiance in Schools.

There was a presentation on the English Language Arts Curriculum adoption plan as well as the Kansas Blueprint for Literacy from Deputy Superintendent, Josh Guymon, and Heather Stegman, Director of Instruction, under reports to the Board.  There was an update on the YMCA Dome.

Under new business, the Board held a first read on the following Curriculum Council items including: GCHS: Business Law, GCHS: Practical Law, and GCHS: Tech Drafting S2. There was a first read of a Training Products and Services quote from AVID Center for $127,452.00 for September 25th and 26th, 2025. There was a first read of a Parents as Teachers Training Reimbursement Agreement. They approved roof repairs at Gertrude Walker Elementary School and Plymell Elementary School. They approved a resolution consenting that the ordinances of the City of Garden City, Kansas pertaining to parking and traffic regulations on city streets shall apply to all of the roads, streets, and driveways of the grounds of all USD 457 schools within the corporate limits of the City of Garden City.

The Board held four executive sessions after the completion of all other business. The first executive session was for preliminary discussion relating to the acquisition of real property. The second executive session was for matters relating to employer-employee negotiations, whether or not in consultation with the representative or representatives of the body or agency. The third executive session was for personnel matters for non-elected personnel. The fourth executive session was for personnel matters for non-elected personnel. No action was taken after the executive sessions.

The next meeting of the Board of Education will be held on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Educational Support Center, 1205 Fleming Street.
