Garfield Early Childhood Center is this week's Superintendent's School of the Week. Here are some things to know about Associate Principal Melanie Garrison and Principal Andrea Baker:
What led you to teaching and what prompted your decision to become a principal?
Mrs. Baker: “I love making a difference and helping others. You get to do both of these in education. After mentoring many teachers and students working on their teaching degree, moving to be an instructional coach and now a principal I feel like I am reaching more people. I am very passionate about early childhood education and want to continue to make a difference in this area.”
Mrs. Garrison: “I have always had a passion for working with young children. After being an early childhood special education teacher for 10 years, I decided that I wanted to pursue becoming a principal so that I could make a difference in the lives of our teachers and students.”
Is there a quote or saying that you live your life by?
Mrs. B: “If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.” -Ignacio Estrada
Mrs. G: “There are three ways to ultimate success: The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind.” -Mister Rogers
What makes a ‘good day’ at school?
Mrs. B: “I love being in the classrooms and watching all of our amazing staff. The passion they have and the way they teach our little ones has me glowing inside. They make preschool such a fun place to be and make learning so fun.”
Mrs. G: “Seeing all of the kids smiling faces and our teachers’ passion for education always makes every day a great day at Garfield.”
What accomplishments fill you with pride so far this year?
Mrs. B: “Our current attendance is 620 students. We are projected to have close to 700 students by the end of the school year, as we continue to enroll students every day. Early Childhood is such an important time in a child's life, so knowing we are making such an impact in our community is a great feeling.”
Mrs. G: “Seeing all the growth our student's have made in their vocabulary development so far this year.”
What inspires you?
Mrs. B: “Coming to work each day and getting to work with the amazing staff, students and parents at Garfield. The staff here has such an important job and they show up ready for the challenge each day. I want to do my best for them, so they can continue to do their job well.”
Mrs. G: “The passion that all the entire staff has for our students is what inspires me everyday.”
