The Garden City High School manufacturing program celebrated Women’s History Month by having a full team of designers, drafters, and builders construct a “Little Library” in honor of Florence Wilson. The library will be placed at Florence Wilson Elementary School to celebrate and share Florence Wilson's love of reading. These Little Libraries can be found at various locations around Garden City and are packed full of free books. The finished Little Library is on its way to the Art Department at GCHS for painting of a mural in honor of Florence Wilson. Plans are to have the library installed before the end of the school year & just in time for summer reading! If you see a book in one of our Little Libraries that you would like to read, feel free to take it with you. You may keep it and add it to your library at home or return it for someone else to enjoy. You can also keep these Little Libraries operating by leaving books for others. Pictured: Jasmine Becerril-Loma, Jordan Humphreys, Kaydeelynn Muniz-Morales, Lindsey Alarcon, Marlene Cortes

Jennie Wilson Elementary School is this week's Superintendent's School of the Week. Here are some things to know about Principal Melinda Stewart: How long have you been the principal at your current school? 13 years What led you to teaching and what prompted your decision to become a principal? There was something about my 4th grade teacher, Miss Kamp, that made me always want to be a teacher. She taught me a life lesson that I still remember to this day. She made a difference to me and that is what I wanted to do. I wanted to make a difference in someone's life also. I went from teaching 25 kids at a time to being on a team where it could be around 75 kids at a time. That feeling of wanting to be around more kids made me think if I was a principal I could be around all of them, every year! So here I am! Where did you go to college? Kansas State University - Home of Willie the Wildcat! and Fort Hays State University What is one of your hidden talents? I can throw a pretty decent curve ball in Pokemon Go. My son got me started playing years ago. I still play it today because the kids at school like to see what I catch and they like to trade Pokemon with me. Gotta catch ‘em all! How do you show your school spirit? We definitely have a lot of school spirit at Jennie Wilson! Our mission statement, Expect Success, Go Cougars, is chanted every morning! We have Friday spirit days and sometimes we call for a spirit day during a special week! Our school pride is on our walls, in our conversations, in our hearts and you can feel it when you walk in the building! We have even poked some spirit in our fence! Drive by! Where did you work in the summers/during college? I worked at Dillons in the deli. I was the best chicken fryer around! I also worked at a Child Care center in the baby unit. It was amazing!
