Horace Good Middle School is this week's Superintendent's School of the Week. Here are some things to know about Principal Brad Springston, Associate Principal Adriana Caro, and Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) Andrew Lee: How long have you been a principal at your current school? Mr. Springston: “14 years (3 as Abe Hubert Hawks and 11 years at HGMS)” Mrs. Caro: “This is my second year as associate principal at HGMS.” Mr. Lee: “I have been a TOSA/Athletic Director for the past two years at HGMS.” What led you to teaching and what prompted your decision to become a principal? Mr. S: “I volunteered as a youth coach for Recreation teams in High School and then got the opportunity to continue this during my senior year in college which led me to teaching and coaching.” Mrs. C: “As an ESL student, school was difficult for me. I struggled with learning English, the school curriculum, and trying to fit in with my peers. However, I always had the support and help from my teachers and I wanted to be that person for others. That path eventually took me to become a principal and continue at a larger scale.” Mr. L: “Like most, I had amazing teachers on my education journey and help foster a love of learning. Even though the transition from teacher to TOSA was an adjustment, I wanted to create an opportunity to help and support teachers in the classroom. This position allows me to have a farther reach than students in my classroom.” What are your hobbies or how do you spend your days off? Mr. S: “I enjoy time spent with my family doing something outside, whether it's fishing, on the boat, golfing, hunting or being in the mountains.” Mrs. C: “On my days off, I enjoy spending time with my family. I have three little girls who keep me busy, but I always try to make time for some reading, which I love to do.” Mr. L: “I enjoy spending time outside doing outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, and running. I also enjoy skiing and hiking when in the mountains. But most of my time is spent with my two young girls and their activities.” What makes a ‘good day’ at school? Mr. S: “A good day at school for me is when I get the chance to interact with our students and staff both inside and outside of the classrooms.” Mrs. C: “A good day at HGMS is when I’m not in my office and I’m in classrooms spending time with students and staff.” Mr. L: “Anytime I can get into a classroom and support our amazing teachers, or help students navigate a lesson. I also enjoy watching our activities after school and seeing students, parents, and community members coming out to support our teams.” What accomplishments fill you with pride so far this year? Mr. S: “This school year has been challenging where we have a number of long term substitutes teaching for us and I have witnessed our staff step up and become leaders helping them be successful in their classroom." Mr. L: “I am proud that our staff has opened their classrooms and have allowed me to help problem solve with them. We have had great brainstorming and dialogue in regards to teaching philosophy and close read activities. Our teachers should be very proud of their ability to take on a challenge and do what is best for our students. I commend our coaches for all of our activities. The time and dedication they provide to our students is unmatched. Our coaches work tirelessly to ensure our students are productive and held accountable in the classroom and on the field. They have fun while doing it and with a smile on their face.”
